Black Label Society Rocks a Packed Showbox Sodo

It was a chilly Monday evening, but that did not prevent the hordes of fans who were waiting patiently to get into the Showbox Sodo. The fans claimed their place in line hours ahead of the scheduled time for the doors to open, hoping to get a great spot in the standing room only sold out venue. Many fans were adorned in their Black Label Society gear. Fans of all ages, were in for an awesome night of serious heavy metal.

The audience was already at capacity when sludge metal band, Eyehategod from New Orleans, LA came on early and got the place fired up. Grinding their way through a 30 minute set, the tone was set for the evening and Eyehategod was more than just a support band on the bill. They got a great reception from the crowd and certainly won over new fans who may have not heard of them prior to this evening’s show.

Touring in support of their newest album, No Cross No Crown, Corrosion of Conformity played an amazing 45 minute set that had everyone in the venue head banging and moshing to their stoner / sludge / southern / hard core brand of metal. Starting their set with “Bottom Feeder (El Que Come Abajo)” and then crunching through “Luddite”, “Seven Days” and “Vote with a Bullet”, the band looked as if they were having the time of their lives on stage and the audience ate up every minute of it.  The band finished off their ten song set with “Albatross” and the ever popular “Clean My Wounds”.

Touring in support of their latest album, Grimmest Hits, it was now time for the Grimmest Show on Earth. As the stage was being changed over, a Black Label Society curtain covered the stage. The audience was singing along with the songs that were being blasted over the sound system as the road crew worked frantically to set up the stage. The lights finally went down and the band hit the stage, with the BLS curtain dropping to reveal Zakk Wylde whipping his hair into a frenzy, slinging his guitar and reaching above his head and then pointing to the crowd to let them know that BLS was here and ready to take no prisoners.

Along with bassist John DeServio, guitarist Dario Lorina and drummer Jeff Fabb, the band was on fire and proceeded to rip through “Genocide Junkies” and “Funeral Bell”. The waves of crowd surfers were making their way to the front of the stage and over the barricade that separated the audience from the stage.

Alternating between the stage and then the metal platform that was next to front center of the stage, which made Wylde look even more intimidating with the serious head banging, performing each riff, lick and solo perfectly and with intensity.

BLS were on point and sounded incredible as they made their way through “Suffering Overdue”, “Bleed for Me”, and “Suicide Messiah”. Wylde took to the piano and performed “In This River” which was a tribute to the late Dimebag Darrell.

The rest of the band are also incredible musicians in their own right. Lorina was excellent in ripping out the riffs that complimented Wylde’s style of playing – and his solos were also exceptional. DeServio was menacing on bass, roaming from one side of the stage to the other, head banging and interacting with the crowd. Fabb was crushing the drums and kept up perfect timing for the rest of the band as they proceeded to lay waste to packed crowd.
