When the rest of Seattle was at CenturyLink Field a select group of lucky individuals were able to witness British rockers Royal Blood as they make a short US tour in support of their latest album “How Did We Get So Dark?”
Fresh off the summer festival, including Bonnaroo and the Governors Ball, were the openers, Welles. The boys from Nashville were a last minute add to support this short Royal Blood headlining run. They list their genre as Dirge but, I feel like they have a grungy vibe. They had a good nine song set that got the crowd dancing and moving.
After a short break and a reset of the stage, Royal Blood took the stage. Vocalist/Bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher create a massive bluesy/rock sound as a duo. Kerr’s is an absolute wizard on the bass and had me looking more than once for the guitar that was not there with some of his solos. Royal Blood’s minimalist stage presence was highlighted by two spot lights on either side of the stage and a wall of LED pillars which crossed the back of the stage.
Royal Blood’s 13-song set had a small interruption after the first song when Mike’s peddle board was having issues. The band’s tech’s got everything squared away and continued on for about an hour and a half. People crowd surfed and generally had a very good time with these British rockers. The highlight for many was the moment when drummer Ben walked out on the crowd and shared a beer with his fans!
Don’t worry if you missed the show. Royal Blood will be back in the PNW this September in support of Guns and Roses; on the 1st in Vancouver, BC, and on the 3rd at The Gorge Amphitheater.
