Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers Pack the Key Arena

The Summer of Living Dangerously Tour featuring Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers made its way to the Key Arena in Seattle. Both bands are acting as co-headliners on this tour and each band performed ninety minute sets chocked full of timeless classics that had fans young and new get out of their seats and start singing and dancing with many famously known songs that have withstood the test of time.

Getting the evening started were Northern California’s Doobie Brothers, who performed a fifteen song hour and a half long set that featured tracks that have spanned the band’s career which is nearing its fifth decade. Featuring members Tom Johnston (guitars / vocals), Patrick Simmons (guitars / vocals) and John McFee (guitars), along with touring musicians John Cowan (bass), Bill Payne (keyboards), Marc Russo (saxophone), Ed Toth (drums) and Marc Quinones (percussion), the band had everyone on their feet from the moment the house lights went down. Opening with “Natural Thing” and followed by “Rockin’ down the Highway”, the band’s sound was superb and the musicianship was on point. The band played many a hit single and fan favorites such as “Taking it to the Streets”, “Jesus is Just Alright”, “Eyes of Silver”, “Black Water”, “Long Train Running” “China Grove” and “Listen to the Music”.

After a short intermission, musicians and vocalists who were to support Donald Fagen for the nineteen song set had made their way to the stage. String instruments (guitar and bass), drums, horn section, keyboard and backing vocalists started the set with a cover of Maynard Ferguson’s “Fan It, Janet”. As the band started “Green Flower Street”, Fagen joined them on stage and they proceeded to performed many Steely Dan hit songs, such as “Hey Nineteen”, “Aja”, “Kid Charlemagne”, “Rikki Don’t Lost That Number”, “Bodhisattva” and “Reeling in the Years”. Fagen and company also performed a good assortment of covers such as “Keep that Same Old Feeling” by The Crusaders and an instrumental version of Nelson Riddle’s “The Untouchables”.
