When it was announced that veteran hard rockers the Scorpions would be bringing special guests Megadeth along for their Crazy World Tour, many were skeptical. Classic heavy rock and thrash metal? Who would have guessed that this would have made for an awesome evening of music?
With only the two bands on the bill, both bands played pretty long sets. Megadeth, who are comprised of Dave Mustaine (vocals/lead guitar), David Ellefson (bass), Kiko Loureiro (lead guitar) and Dirk Verbeuren (drums), kicked off the evening to a full house at the Tacoma Dome. The band played a killer one-hour set that featured many of their best-known selections from their storied career.
With the large displays on both sides of as well as behind the stage, the video intro along with the animations that were displayed while the band played was a true compliment to the sound of the music. The band tore through the opener, “Hanger 18”, then jumped into “The Threat Is Real”, and “Take No Prisoners” without a break between each song.
The surprise of the night was the band performing “Mechanix” off their debut album Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good! The band’s playing this evening was ferocious and they hit many songs that were fan favorites. Finishing their set with “Peace Sells…” and “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due”, along with the lights, the sound, the music showed why Megadeth is still one of the best live performers within any genre of music and they fit perfectly on this bill.
Scorpions need no introduction. The band has been around the better part of the last five decades and they seem to get better with every tour. The band is currently made up of Rudolf Schenker (rhythm/lead guitar), Klaus Meine (vocals), Matthias Jabs (lead/rhythm guitar) Pawel Maciwoda (bass) and Mikkey Dee (drums).
The band opened their set with “Going Out With a Bang”. Schenker and Maciwoda at stage left, Meine dead center and working the front row crowd, Jabs stage right and Dee behind the kit, the audience were on their feet and going crazy. Schenker is a ball of energy, running around the stage and up and down the catwalk. During “Make It Real”, Jabs and Macidowa would join Schenker at the top of the catwalk and interact with the fans.
Scorpions were in top form, playing songs that many fans were familiar with, such as “Coast to Coast”, “Winds of Change”, “Blackout” and “Big City Nights”. Surprises were in store as the awesome acoustic medley of “Always Somewhere / Eye of the Storm / Send Me an Angel” had all members at the front of the catwalk, including Dee who had a scaled down drum kit.
Speaking of Dee, he is mostly known for his work with Motorhead, and the Scorpions paid tribute to Motorhead’s deceased leader, Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister” by performing “Overkill”. The LED panels displayed a wall of Marshall Amps and Cabinets, similar to the backline Motorhead was infamously known for. At the conclusion of “Overkill”, Dee proceeded to pound and an incredible drum solo.
The audience were not ready to let the band call it an evening and the Scorpions obliged by coming back for their encore and performing “No One Like You”, “Still Loving You” and “Rock You Like A Hurricane”.
Scorpions have always been great live, and this evening was no exception. The band was hitting hard and charging full steam ahead from the first note to the last note of their awesome two hour set.
